TWELVE FACES OF STYLE | STYLE MUSE | David Bowie, Aquarius Rising

This post first appeared as a part of Twelve Faces of Style, a collaborative project with sacred stylist Jacquelyn Tierney, that examined style through the lens of astrology.

In this series, we’ve chosen twelve style muses - one for each ascendant - to help you discover how the twelve faces tell their unique style stories. Your ascendant (or, the constellation that was on the horizon at the time you were born) is just as important, if not more, than your sun. Also called your rising sign, it tells us how you present yourself to the world. When you dress like your rising sign, you look comfortable, confident, and sexy.

Even if you don’t have the featured ascendant, if your sun or Venus is in that sign, you’ll also want to take note. Don’t have any of that sign in your chart? This will help you spot those star sign types when you’re out and about. Your friends will think it’s magic!

To say that David Bowie was the ultimate in Aquarius ascendant style would be a massive understatement. His singular aesthetic will go down in history as everything that makes Uranians great: revolutionary, avant-garde chic, a true iconoclast. Every Aquarius rising can learn a little something from his fearless approach to presentation, on stage and off.

Here's how to incorporate a bit of Bowie's Aquarian genius into your own wardrobe:

SPACE ODDITY

No Bowie retrospective would be complete without an homage to his turn as Ziggy Stardust, the original space oddity and eternal poster child for Aquarius people everywhere. From pancake makeup and glitter to capes, tights, and bangles, no accouterments were off limits.

For those of you that can't rock spandex and sequins on a daily basis, take a page out of Bowie's book and stay weird, no matter what the situation. Aquarius ascendant people look their best when there's an otherworldly or costume component of their attire. Vibe like you might be from outer space for best results.

JEAN GENIE

The rumors are true - Aquarius rising people look gorgeous in denim. Their innate detachment translates into a level of cool that is perfectly embodied in that most studied yet nonchalant of fashion statements: blue jeans. Alternately, they use them as a means to travel incognito and avoid shocking the rest of us mere mortals. Either way, they pull it off. See Bowie looking magnificent in a courtyard below.

Here's another shot of the Thin White Duke looking as fantastic in casual wear in 2003 as he did nearly thirty years prior in 1977. It captures the anachronistic, ageless quality that so many Aquarius ascendants possess.

If you're unsure what shade to choose, note the silver grey and cool blues that keep popping up in the Aquarius color palette. Think futuristic - titanium, rocketships, and icy comets.

REBEL REBEL

Rebellion is an Aquarius's highest calling. Sublimated into fashion, it equals looks that are original, iconic, and enduring for generations due to their genuine audacity and innovation. Case in point - Bowie's Tokyo Pop bodysuit.

The vast majority of Bowie's costumes are so visually startling that even over thirty years later they manage to intrigue. Uranus, Aquarius's ruler, loves to surprise - so he's working that angle perfectly. There's an also androgyny to his wardrobe that Aquarius rising people carry off so well, and a certain symmetry. The rabble-rouser quality of Uranus permeates the details of this look - like the contrasting black and white with pops of bright color.

Here he is at GQ in 2002, using details as a form of subtle rebellion again. The silver metallic threads in the fabric add just enough interest to remind you that this is, in fact, the man who fell to earth.

We'll miss you, David. Thank you for everything, Starman!

TWELVE FACES OF STYLE | STYLE MUSE | Kanye West, Cancer Rising

While Kanye West might be better known for his spectacular shows, lyrical braggadocio, and general megalomania, his style is another thing altogether. Possessed of a demure Cancer ascendant, West appreciates timeless fashion and favors classic colors, looks, and fabrics that feel like home - whether he's playing with Nori and Saint or rocking the stage in Paris.

Here's why we think he's the ultimate example of Cancer swagger, for ladies and men alike.

PREP SCHOOL

No one does preppy quite like Cancer. Maybe it's their innate appreciation for heritage and items that stand the test of time, but you can trust them to always have a clean white shirt and pressed blazer on hand. West shocked his contemporaries with this look back when oversize pants and shirts were the norm, unabashedly rocking backpacks and sweaters from the stage to the after parties.

Cancer rules the ocean, so there's a bit of a nautical slant to their style too. Boat shoes and killer sunglasses (above) are a must. For the ladies, pearls and a striped top are de rigeur.

Bonus points for a vest or cardigan circa Kanye in 2007 (see above).

NEUTRAL TERRITORY

Even though friends of Cancer rising may wonder if they own any clothing outside of their strict palette of white, black, and tan, these natives know that neon colors and gem tones are unnecessary. They glow in ivories, camels, and charcoals, and their wardrobes are a veritable rainbow of neutral hues. Who knew there could be so many shades of grey?

Naturally, Kanye nearly always rocks a neutral color (save for a few My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy era looks) and is stunning in the spread from GQ magazine above.

For a more seductive approach, consider adding blush or textured black fabrics to your ensemble. Soft felt and plush furs appeal to Cancer's warm and nurturing side.

COMFORT ZONE

No matter where they're going, Cancer rising believes in function over form. Blame it on their patroness - Lady Luna - but these people crave comfort and nourishment in all things, even their style.

Case in point: West being interviewed on Jimmy Kimmel, working a "Sorry, I've been painting my kitchen and didn't have time to change" look. Lived-in is a very Cancerian sentiment - no unnecessary costume or ornament here. Only what feels good.

That theme reappears in his inaugural fashion collection for Adidas, already a brand known for their sport- and lounge-wear. Again we see the neutral color palette making an appearance, and the designs have a languid quality that take comfort to an extreme. It may not be the most fashion-forward, but some might say that this "second skin" apparel is the perfect Cancer garment. It's as cozy as cozy gets and allows for the fluid movement that comes so readily to this sign.

Not so into the futuristic look? Knitwear of any shape, size, or texture looks fantastic on Cancer rising. You really can't go wrong.

One final note for our Crab fashionistas - Cancer style doesn't have to to be minimal! We love these Zanotti + West heels, decked out with Cancerian embellishments. The pearls, blush, knit, and neutrals all come together to make the ultimate addition to your Crab rising wardrobe.

TWELVE FACES OF STYLE | STYLE MUSE | Amy Winehouse, Gemini Rising

No one embodies the perpetually ebullient spirit of Gemini rising quite like Amy Winehouse. The late songstress's singular aesthetic, both in her music and her wardrobe, have inspired countless imitators, but none hold a candle to her unique blend of unflappable innocence and raw candor - both characteristic of her ascendant.

Read on to see why we think she's the patron saint of Gemini style.

MAGPIE CHIC

Gemini rising is the sign most likely to hoard a secret (or not-so-secret) stash of shiny objects with which to adorn herself, and she doesn't limit her accessorizing to evening. Mid-day is a perfectly reasonable time for one possessed of a Gemini ascendant to rock a statement necklace - or in Amy's case, a set of leopard print earrings - with loungewear and unparalleled panache. They're also given to collections of kitsch, especially of a vintage or rockabilly ilk, and know how to wield pops of color or a killer print.

GAMINE FOREVER

gamine - (noun) |gam·ine, ɡaˈmēn/| a girl with mischievous or boyish charm.

No matter what may be going on behind the scenes, a Gemini rising always projects as charming. She's not naive, but the trademark doe-eyes of this rising sign could fool an unsuspecting suitor into thinking otherwise. In short, she knows how to turn on the charm. A fresh face with feline eyeliner is the perfect complement to this vibe - a look that Amy made her signature style, and to great effect. Pair with houndstooth (see above), gingham, or other nostalgic indicators for best results.

ON THE EDGE

True to their dual nature, the Twins rising balance out their inner ingenue with a serious DGAF attitude. Gemini rules communication, and nothing is more important to the Gemini ascendant than telling their truth. Most do so with a rock and roll flare, so tattoos, leather, and other punk-inspired accents are a plus. Still, their rock star tendencies can manifest for better or for worse. Geminis have a tendency to live in their mind and ignore the needs of their bodies, so make sure to give yourself proper nutrition, hydration, and self-care.

You're a beautiful soul, gone too soon. We love you, Amy.

TWELVE FACES OF STYLE | STYLE MUSE | Lana Del Rey, Taurus Rising

THIS POST FIRST APPEARED AS A PART OF TWELVE FACES OF STYLE, A COLLABORATIVE PROJECT WITH SACRED STYLIST JACQUELYN TIERNEY, THAT EXAMINED STYLE THROUGH THE LENS OF ASTROLOGY.

Taurus 1.png

This time around, we’re head over heels for Lana Del Rey’s sumptuous Taurus style. With Venus right on top of her Taurus ascendant, her aesthetic exemplifies the love goddess archetype. Taurus is ruled by Venus, so when Lady Love is in her home sign, she’s even more voluptuous than usual. Perhaps that’s why everything Miss LDR touches seems so perfectly branded, from her sexy new duet with The Weeknd to her cinematic video for High By The Beach.

For added sultry oomph, Lana’s also got wild woman Lilith and the north node close by. “Sizzling like a snare” isn’t just a song to her - it’s a magic ritual.

PASTELS

Soft, delicate hues are the Taurean calling card. That doesn’t mean you’re condemned to dress like an easter egg for life. To the contrary, think natural. Venus rules flowers of all kinds, especially those of the fragrant variety. All shades of rose, peach, and petal enhance the famously juicy glow of Taurus rising’s skin. Bonus points for incorporating them into a flower crown or other hair accessory.

GREAT LENGTHS

Hair, lashes, nails - you name it. The Taurus rising’s extremities are at their best when long and luscious. They act as a sort of spider’s web, a soft gossamer they use to enchant and ensnare their prey. Though Leo people are typically more associated with the “more is more” dramatic look, Taurus rising natives can work it just as effectively, and LDR is no exception.

FEMME FATALE

Surely the archetypal Bond girl has a Taurus ascendant. Lana Del Rey plays up this part of her act as the Lolita and the temptress. Taurus rising women aren’t relegated to these roles - in fact, they have the power to inhabit their sexuality fully and feel deeply empowered by it. Embrace your inner femme fatale in a slinky gown or a form-fitting trenchcoat worthy of international intrigue.

With her new album, we may see Lana take a more bohemian and ethereal direction with her look! With Jupiter in Virgo trine her natal Neptune in Capricorn, this mystical combination could see her exploring a more spiritual side of her life, or at least traveling quite a bit!

Later next year, karmic teacher Saturn will move across her natal Uranus in Sagittarius, causing a few growing pains along the way. This would be a great opportunity for her to cull her proverbial (or literal!) closet and let any extraneous pieces all by the wayside.

Either way, we predict that Lana style will stay on point throughout her career. With Venus in Taurus on her ascendant, she's got the love goddess's blessing all the way!

How do you know if Taurus shows up in your chart? Go to www.astro.com and enter your birth details into the Chart Drawing Ascendant option. Look for the glyph that looks like a bull's head, and you’ll be all set.

How do you rock your Taurus style?
