This month’s guest is Amy Palko. When I received my beautiful 2014 Word Goddess reading from her last December, I knew I had to feature her here! She’s a self-proclaimed digital priestess and goddess guide, bringing the divine feminine to modern devotees and nourishing the sacred within us all.
1. What is your favorite part of your birth chart (if you had to choose)?
Neptune conjunct my Ascendent in Sagittarius.
One of my favourite quotes is by Pablo Neruda - "I need the sea because it teaches me." This is the way I show up in my world - at home swimming through the sea of the collective unconscious, imagining stories, manifesting poetic beauty, creating mythic self-portraits. Exquisitely written philosophy turns me on - and this is what I willingly step forward to receive and to offer.
One of my friends described me as akin to the figurehead attached to the bowsprit of a ship, arms pinned back, spine curved, gaze direct, breasts bared… leading heart-first into the mystery. I can't think of a more apt description of how I move through life!
2. If there a part of your chart that you find particularly challenging? If so, how do you make it work it to your benefit?
Without at doubt, Saturn in Virgo. I have such an attendance to service and to work in my life which I often allow to get way out of proportion in the context of my life. I actually said to the lady at the checkout yesterday that I loved my job, but my boss was a tyrant! I am the one who begins work before I get out of bed in the morning, and then takes her work to bed with her at night - answering emails, responding to client questions, supporting colleagues, brainstorming new offerings. I'm constantly pushing myself to be more organised, more consistent, more focused… and if I allow it, this can bring my work into a very contracted place.
It's in my nature to work hard and to bring full attendance to that part of my life. And this is part of what allows me to claim my sovereignty here - I hold the potential to integrate my own authority. And as long as I hold that bigger picture, then I can guard against the compulsion to push myself to the limits of my ability to deliver. I can begin to see how, in order to be in a position to do my best work, I need to take that level of focus and attention and conviction to my own self-care. And it is this piece that keeps me from burning out.
3. I love that you have Venus retrograde. I don't come across that placement very often! It's also really prominent in your chart, being close to your Sun. How do you see it working in your life?
Yes - this fascinated me too when I discovered it! I have the Sun, Venus and Uranus conjunct in Scorpio in the 10th house. And yes, Venus is retrograde.
The way I see this expressing is primarily through the bigger picture of my business. I see part of my role, and, if I'm being completely honest here, my social responsibility, to return to the ancient myths of goddess worship to shine a light on the hidden stories of women as they access their own personal wisdom of love, sex, desire, beauty, death, fertility, wholeness. Part of the reason why I'm here doing the work is to retrieve these gifts and to deliver them back through my business.
And my business is very much my life. I walk my talk. The material of my life nourishes my business. So as I follow the red thread of Venus Rx back through my own life, feeling into the places of my desire, touching in with the tender places, brushing up against my own resistance, tracing the words with sensitive fingertips to read the stories of the felt experience of the feminine…. as I do this for myself, I bring it out into the sunlight so others can receive the transmission also. And this for me is the revolution. To access, receive, and then make available the lost and hidden wisdom of the feminine self, to bring us back to the core truth that's been lying dormant in our flesh, to reclaim the power present in the embodied experience…. revolutionary.
4. You work closely with goddess archetypes, helping women uncover their inner goddess and the feminine divine energy available all of us. What connections do you see between the goddess archetypes and the stars?
Perhaps one of the most obvious ways is explorations around goddess asteroids. My default setting for my charts include Pallas Athena, Juno, Vesta, Ceres, Sedna, Psyche, Persephone and Black Moon Lilith. I have Pallas, Vesta and Ceres in my 1st house with Juno initiating my 2nd house. So goddesses, for me, are very much a core identifier of self. Learning their stories, but perhaps more importantly, seeing how they present in our everyday lived experience, is one way that we can begin to activate goddess energy in our lives. And reflecting back on the natal positions and transits in our chart with a specific awareness of these asteroids is one way of deepening that process.
I would also say that the moon is an absolutely core influence on the feminine goddess self. The cycles of the moon have long been associated with the cycles that show up for women in their bodies, in their fertility, in their emotional field. Tracking the cycles of the moon through the signs and through its movement from new to full and back again keep me in tune with the goddess as she expresses simultaneously in my external world and my inner landscape.
5. Does astrology play a part in your spiritual practice? If so, how?
It plays a very big part in my spiritual practice. My birth chart sits at the very centre of my altar. My map and my mandala, it acts as a portal into the mythic and the intimate aspects of my being. It is a vital and core element to my spiritual practice - and one that is becoming increasingly more important to me.
I've been working with Kathleen Prophet for the last 18 months, who has been teaching me the way of the embodied arts - how to integrate the astrological archetypes through the initiations available in the transits of my chart. Rarely does a day go by when I don't pull up my chart and unveil some new insight of self through flow-writing around whatever my eye is drawn to in that moment.
I also participate in new moon women's circles and rituals - the dark of the moon is potent energy to drop into whatever is present for us. And knowing which sign the moon is in at that point has really brought to me a deeper understanding and a more nuanced approach. Astrology is such an incredible gift in the journey of self-actualisation - and, as such, I honour it in my personal practice. I feel like it's given me the keys to me.
